A variety of services enables consumers who are deaf, hard of hearing or hearing full access to communications in the most effective mode for the individual.
The Center hires qualified Sign Language interpreters, Oral interpreters, Note-takers and CART transcriptions to provide communication access in medical, legal, economic, government, educational, or other situations. The Deaf & Hard of Hearing Center also coordinates communication access for conferences, television appearances, and community meetings.

Why does a person need Communication Services?

Persons who are Deaf may choose to communicate with Hearing persons by:

  • Writing notes
  • Using Qualified Sign Language Interpreters
  • Computerized typed conversations

Communication Access Realtime Translation (C.A.R.T.)– is performed using a specially trained certified CART provider that uses a stenotype machine, notebook com-puter, and Realtime translation software. The role of the CART provider is to display the spoken word. CART provides a full screen of text on a notebook computer or with additional equipment can be displayed on a television or projected on a screen.

Projected Transliteration – (P.T.L.) – is performed by using more note taking style. The PTL provider takes computerized notes in classes or meetings.


The Communication Services we provide help to support the effective communication required by Section
504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
